Project goal
Design a visionary car-connected mobile app concept with minimum features needed for improved comfort and safety while driving.
INDUSTRY \ CLIENT
Automotive \ Orange Telecom
Role
Main designer for:
leading the project, communicating with the client
defining interaction / UI concept based on requirements
UI design with the support of a visual designer/prototyper.
Design Process
After collecting and analyzing key requirements from the client, I defined key user stories and design directions to reflect in my concept and design. Here is a rough overview of the process followed:
EXPLORE HIGH-LEVEL CONCEPT DIRECTIONS
The driver should be able to access modes quickly between settings, entertainment, communication, navigation. The driver should be able to switch between these modes securely, the driver should be able to be notified of important events without being disturbed while driving.
Based on these stories, key design directions are defined with focus on a UI optimised for driving, quick & secure access, easy switch between the modes (entertainment, navigation, communication…), minimum set of textual information, multi-views, space efficiency…
EXPLORE IA & INTERACTION DESIGN DIRECTIONS
Taking all these requirements, I translated them into interface ideas, built the overall architecture & structure together with appropriate interaction patterns. Nothing better than a paper and a pencil to mock initial ideas up :)
design wireframes
After iteration, main interaction models were defined and conceptualised to then take them to the visual design. Below are key screens of the app around entertainment (SMS), navigation, and entertainment (radios).
A structure of the app that is optimized for in-car use, dynamic interaction and transition between modes is key highlight of this product.
EXPLORE Visual design variants
Translation of the wireframes into a final design with branded visuals considering the Orange brand design guideline in close collaboration with a talented visual designer, Patrick Gasselsdorfer.
A few design variants were proposed from a more conservative with heavy use of orange tones all the way to a more progressive version with the use of a complementary colors like light green tones.
HIGH-FIDELITY INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE FOR SHOWCASE
A highly interactive prototype was built with a talented prototyper, Oliver Reichelt. This was successfully showcased for Orange Hello Show 2014 in Paris, France. Here is the promotional video.
